China & Megan

Although this didn't happen during an official BGA event, it was Fruity's tournament which is sanctioned and supported by the BGA. This video was captured at the bar after the tournament ended and is basically a simple case of China being China. I especially like the expressions of disgust on our barmaid Megan's face after he asks her to pose for the BGA blog. Priceless ...

By the way, Megan is the girl I wrote about previously who was 1 years old when we started the BGA in 1989. Funny how she grew up and the rest of us stayed the same age.

(Not So) Perfect Attendance

Not much to say about Week 6 except that nobody was there. That was by far the most pathetic display of attendance since the league was formed. We had a total of 9 league members play. The missing?

Fruity, Ciurzynski, Pesta, Korba: in Vegas. Valid excuse for Fruity since he almost lives there anyway but not for the other three guys.
George: recovering from open heart surgery which I consider a valid excuse
Tim Crist: in Albany for work (not a valid excuse)
Jack Walsh: preparing for cataract surgery. Not valid because he doesn't see that well anyway.
Mark Neff: unknown absence which I will consider a valid excuse for Mark. And this the 3rd missed week of the year for Mark which is astounding for a guy who had perfect attendance just two years ago.
Scott Kantorski was also absent and I will accept whatever reason he has as valid so he doesn't yell at me.
Ken Karl was there and shot 39.

I don't know her name but she's the barmaid with dark hair and 14 tattoos and she looks like she's still in high school. Nice girl. I told her that when we started our league she was probably watching Sesame Street on TV. She asked me what year we started, I said 1989, she said she was one then. So the BGA existed before the new barmaid started to watch Sesame Street! Tell me we're not getting older, just better.

After Week 5 ...

Here are a few headlines ....

George Cameron had successful open heart surgery a few days ago. That makes at least 6 BGA guys who have had some kind of cardiac procedure while a member of this league. Must have something to do with the water. Actually, several of us thought that George was the guy causing the heart conditions in the rest of us. Best BGA wishes to our recovering comrade. Get better George. Fruity misses your money!

June 5th was the fifth week of BGA play and brought with it our first competition of the year. The BGA 4Ball Scramble was won by Tim Crist, Mark Neff, Ken Karl and Scott Kantorski with a blistering score of 34. I thought the winning score would have been a bit lower but I guess those guys couldn't make a putt that night.

Next up is our 3-Club Tournament which will be held on week #10. And just to clear up any confusion on the part of any BGA guys who work in Cheektowaga, "Week 10" means our 10th week of league play, not what should have been our 10th week if it hadn't rained.

Mark Neff is a Good Golfer

Hard to believe isn't it? Mark Neff gave me this scorecard by mistake the other night and apparently he's been playing with some other guys on the side. Don't know who else is in this threesome, but you have to be impressed with Mark's score. You can click on the card to make it bigger and see Mark's incredible accomplishment for yourself.

Actually, someone named Rhein Gibson actually shot this round a couple days ago in Oklahoma at a real golf course. Wonder what he would shoot at CHCC? Check out the whole story.

1989 and "Lefty" Coons

There was talk the other night about the age of the BGA. I honestly did not recall when we started and nobody else did either so I contacted an old friend, Tim Coons. Coonsey was a charter member of the league and played for the first couple years before moving on to right-handed clubs and greener pastures. Now living in Atlanta, we keep in touch from time to time through facebook so I sent him a message asking what he remembered about our beginning. He replied:

"It was 1989. Good memories, buddy. I do miss a lot of that camaraderie."

Interesting story about my friend, Tim. Before we started play that first year, he and his wife Julie decided that they did not own golf clubs worthy of the new league. So off they went to Dick's Sporting Goods where they tried out a few sets in the indoor driving range. They each choose a set to their liking and took them home in the long cardboard box that all new clubs are packed in.

Several days (or perhaps weeks) later, with opening day approaching, they took their new irons, still boxed at this point, to a driving range. When Tim opened his box, he found the clubs he selected except for one small difference ...  they were left-handed. From that time on, Tim was always "Lefty" on the golf course.

Of course I couldn't help but wonder if the "pro" at Dick's, after watching Tim hit a few, was secretly suggesting that he switch to southpaw. After all, it worked for Mickleson. Come to think of it, Jim Ciurzynski switched sides too, although he went from lefty to righty.

So thanks, Coonsey, for the memories and your memory about 1989 and the birth of the BGA.

(There is another interesting story about Tim, Julie, ex-HDP delivery driver Walt Otto, and their home at the time in Pavilion. Maybe some other time...)

49 Degrees, Cloudy, Wet & Windy

Whew, that was a cold round of golf. So cold that John Brown didn't open his first beer until the tee box on #16. Today's nice, though. 67 and sunny right now and much better for golf and beer. Too bad we're not playing today. The weather didn't bother the Crist/Neff group though. With scores of 40 and 41 those guys have vaulted to the top of the BGA Classic. Let's see what happens to Lefty once the weather heats up.  Mark also explained that the shitty weather was somehow Obama's fault. It got a little foggy for me  somewhere between the unions and non-unions and roofing labor and harnesses but the bottom line was quite clear: Obama's fault.

So I have the scores loaded and updated and the BGA Classic Leaderboard done. Which reminds me, if you want to play in the BGA Classic you have to tell me and ante up the $20 entry fee. Let me know by next Tuesday.

I'm hoping for shorts weather the rest of the year.

Jimmy Marino, Jr Memorial Golf Outing

Here's the announcement for Fruity's Jimmy Marino, Jr Memorial Tournament. This is the 11th year for this  Make A Wish fundraiser and anyone who has been there has had a great time. Fruity and Kelly do a great job and it's hard not to get at least a little teary-eyed at the end.

Let's all get behind Fruity for this outstanding day. Donate, sponsor, sign-up, show-up, have fun!

Pebble Beach

Last October Coleen and I vacationed in California for a week or so. Most of the time we were in Napa (wine, not car parts) but we started on Monterrey Peninsula where they have some stunning views and a couple very famous golf courses. This photo was taken behind the 18th green at Pebble Beach. Always wanted to play there and still do but at least I can say I was there. Even have a putter cover to prove it that I'll be glad to show off this year. I watched a group play the 18th that day and they were hacking it up pretty good. Reminded me of the way some of us play the 15th at Chestnut except it cost them at lot more money for the priviledge. A bit more scenic out there though. Mid-season weekend tournament at Pebble anyone?

No golf courses in this shot but pretty cool anyway. Pacific coast along Highway 1 at Big Sur.

Backyard Putting Greens

Centerpiece of Mark Neff's backyard in his new Spaulding Lake home. Notice the left-handed rake in the bunker.

The Other Guys in Fruity's Foursome

Always good to have the Stooges back on the website ... Larry, George & Moe.
As a matter of fact, I'm thinking of getting these engraved and using for this year's trophies ...

Welcome to the 2012 BGA

The 2012 BGA will begin play on Tuesday, May 1st at the formidable Chestnut Hill Country Club in the rolling hills and wetlands of Darien, NY and if you're reading this, you are probably expected to attend.

This years BGA will consist of 16 highly competitive weeks of sub-championship golf and cocktail consumption and will be supplemented by wagers, whining and incorrect counting. Our roster is one less than last year with the departure of Mike "The Shiek" Tramuta who has moved on to a better league in his hometown of Dunkirk. Guess our money wasn't good enough for him.

According to the league packet I got yesterday, nothing much has changed except we are playing 16 weeks instead of 15. Dues are $272 for the year and payable directly to Chestnut on or before the 1st night of play.

Please note the BGA Schedule to the right listing this years important dates not to be missed. I have also added a new page that details the BGA competitions so there is no misunderstanding when Fruity wins them all. If anyone has any ideas for other fun events to break up the monotony of our weekly excursions, please feel free to submit them for vote.
