Who Is This Helmeted Man?

Looks to me like George has everything he needs except golf clubs, cooler and Fruity. Oh yeah, I don't see any tires in the back either. Come to think of it, maybe it's not even George. No wonder he never gets to drive.

China & the BGA Championship

In a stunning upset that rocked Darien, NY under sunny September skies that turned into a chilly autumn evening, the 2010 BGA Championship was claimed by first time winner and legendary handicap inflater Joe (China) Marino. China dominated the nine man field with an impressive round of 68 to defeat a couple of other guys who shot 70. China's victory was unexpected to everyone except himself. After the award ceremony where he accepted the championship trophy (complete with matching plastic driver), China commented, "I'll probably write a book now. You can catch up with me in the spring doing book signings. And in the meantime I'll be giving lessons in one of the golf domes in town."

Actually, he may not have used those exact words but the feeling was the same. It was kind of hard to tell who said what once the raffle tickets stared to fly and the awning sides were lowered to protect the heat. Plus there was a fair amount of dialog and accusation about a certain BGA member and swordsmanship that I didn't understand.

As it turned out, little was said about China's controversial appeal to the commissioner before the 2008 BGA season to "jack up my handicap a few" until his scorecard from this year's week 15 revealed that he carded a 59 thereby jacking something up for himself. In spite of that potential controversy, it can not undermine the fact that China is the 2010 BGA Champion. Of course, the pressure is on to repeat and defend his victory next year which is why I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot of him at the golf dome either practicing, giving lessons or signing books.

In another irony of the 2010 season, an award was established for Perfect Attendance in honor of the BGA member who best exemplified showing up every week. Unfortunately, the 2010 winner of the BGA Perfect Attendance Award, Mark Neff of Depew, NY was not present to accept his award. That sounds about right for this league.

So now it's on to next year and I'm already working on changes .... most notably a new venue. Could it be bye bye to CHCC? Details to follow. Merry Christmas everyone and I'll see you in April.
